The city has upgraded its transit fleet, adding 10 new GOVA buses to replace aging vehicles.

Last summer, the City of Greater Sudbury and federal and provincial governments announced funding for public transit and active transportation projects in Greater Sudbury through the Investing in Canada Plan.

This included the purchase of 53 buses over eight years to replace older vehicles in the fleet.

“These new buses help us better serve residents,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. “They significantly improve rider experience and the dependability of our public transit system, while at the same time, reduce maintenance costs and emissions. I want to thank our federal and provincial partners for their support in improving access to public transit and safely getting our residents to where they need to be.”

All of the new buses have low floor entries, automated ramps and audio-visual next stop alerts. Seats are upholstery-free for easier cleaning and improved comfort.

Priority seating folds up when not in use to make room for two wheelchairs or scooters per bus. Passengers using wheelchairs also benefit from a safer rear-facing seating position.

Rear destination signs show route numbers, and have better colour contrast for increased visibility. Buses are also equipped with an additional exterior camera and a new front door design that provides better visibility for bus operators and less heating and cooling loss.

In addition to the new fleet, the city is working on other projects aimed at improving the transit system and reducing maintenance costs, including bringing smart card technology to GOVA buses and building new major mobility hubs in the downtown, New Sudbury and south end to improve customer experience.
