The Elgin Street Mission is announcing an Extreme Cold Weather Alert on behalf of the City of Greater Sudbury.
The high for today, Monday, Dec. 6 is minus 6. Minus temperatures are expected all week.
An Extreme Cold Weather Alert is a short-term emergency response to increase services for people who are especially vulnerable to intensely cold weather conditions.
People on the street will be encouraged to voluntarily access shelters and services.
Individuals who may be at risk due to low temperatures in their homes are also eligible for these services.
Under a community partnership agreement, agencies will extend the following services:
Shelters: Elizabeth Fry Transitional Home, Foyer Notre Dame, Inner Sight Educational Homes and the Salvation Army Centre will increase shelter capacity and exercise leniency in curfews.
Drop-In Centre: The Elgin Street Mission daytime drop-in centre will extend its hours to offer overnight service.
Outreach: L?Association des jeunes de la rue (Community Outreach Program) will provide overnight services to make contact with people on the street and to transport individuals to shelters. Shelters do not have the authority to confine individuals without their consent. Outreach workers will be equipped with extra clothing, blankets and coffee for those who choose not to access shelters.
Hot Line 675-6422: L?Association des jeunes de la rue will operate an overnight phone line to direct callers to appropriate services and to take calls from concerned citizens.
Additional support: Greater Sudbury Police Service, the Sudbury and District Health Unit and the Canadian Red Cross are partners in the Extreme Cold Weather Alert strategy for the City of Greater Sudbury.
