Two of Greater Sudbury's mean streets are listed among the Top 20 worst roads for 2005.
The Municipal Roads Coalition has selected Paris St. (No. 6) and Notre Dame Ave. (No. 19) as two of the worst roads in province. Roads are judged on categories such as most congested, dangerous and maintenance.
The worst road in Ontario is Steeles Ave. W in Toronto, followed by Carling Ave. in Ottawa.
The coalition website reports Sudbury drivers say there are so many bad roads here they have a hard time selecting one. Work being done on municipal roads is not making them better and residents are fed up with construction delays on Paris St, the coalition says.
Although 19th on the provincial list, Notre Dame is second on Sudbury driver's list. Comments included, "Potholes, potholes, and more potholes. Bumpy train tracks. And especially in front of the Burger King, the road is so uneven that if you go more than 30km/hr, you?re sure your car will fall apart."
The selection was based on public nominations and site inspections. Since Sept. 13, nearly 5,000 people from across the province logged on to www.worstroads.ca. The top-ranked roads were then inspected last week by local road experts.
A recent CAA poll found that 75 percent of Canadians believe improving roads and highways should be one of Ottawa's top four priorities (along with health care, education and jobs).
