The downtown transit terminal is undergoing renovations to create “a more welcoming environment for passengers,” Greater Sudbury said in a news release Tuesday.

The changes include fresh paint and new flooring indoors, and improved lighting and new asphalt outdoors.

“Prime contractor Capital Construction has installed safety fencing at the bus terminal,” the release said. “Renovations will be phased so that all areas of the transit terminal are not under construction at the same time.”

The work won't cause disruptions to passenger service and is expected to be complete by Nov. 28.

Exterior work includes removal of a steel structure and canopy facing Elm Street, new asphalt and curbs, improved lighting and refinished bus shelters, benches and handrails.

Interior work includes paint, new flooring, improved lighting, new washroom fixtures and the replacement of boiler and HVAC systems.

The first phase of exterior renovations, between Aug. 2-9, will close Platform 1 to buses on the Paris Street side of the terminal. Buses that normally stop at platform 1 will stop at platform 2 beside the transit terminal.

Pedestrian access from Elm Street to the Transit Terminal will close from Aug. 3-31. A temporary pedestrian access is provided from an existing pathway on the Paris Street side of the Terminal. Access from Cedar Street will be unaffected by construction.

The work is being paid for through the Canada-Ontario Public Transit Infrastructure Fund. The federal government is matching the $500,000 from the city, for a total $1 million.
