During the opening ceremony of the 8th National Heritage Fair in Newfoundland this month, Sudbury was named the site for the July 2003 event.
Senator Laurier LaPierre, spokesperson for the Heritage Fair program, called on two Newfoundland students to present a hand-carved West Coast talking stick to Brianna Alkenbrack of Napanee, and Adam Léger, a Grade 5 Val Caron student.
The talking stick was introduced at the Kamloops Heritage Fair in 2001 to symbolize the sharing of stories among children.
The fair brings together students from Grades 4 to 9 to spend a week sharing stories about their corner of Canada while exploring the history and culture of the host city. Delegates are selected from among the 140,000 students from 500 schools who participated in regional heritage fairs in May.
