On hiatus since the beginning of the pandemic, the Classroom Closet conference is back and happening Feb. 17 at Place des arts. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A partnership between Réseau ACCESS Network and Fierté Sudbury Pride, the Classroom Closet Conference will bring 2S-LGBTQ+ high school students, teachers and allies together to build on existing knowledge and skills required to support and advocate for 2S-LGBTQ+ people. The conference began in 2008 but has been on a hiatus since the beginning of the pandemic. This year the partners are looking to continue the work of past conferences to better support the needs of the 2S-LGBTQ+ people in Greater Sudbury.

“Fierté Sudbury Pride is proud to partner with Réseau Access Network to create opportunities for community members to come together, celebrate, and learn how to support and advocate for the 2S-LGBTQ+ people in their lives,” said Kyelle Byne, Sponsorship Lead of Fierté Sudbury Pride. “Events like Classroom Closet are essential to our vision of championing a strong, vibrant, and intersectional community of 2S-LGBTQ+ people and allies that exists openly and safely in Greater Sudbury.”

Workshops will be delivered for teachers and students on healthy sexuality, safer sex, inclusion of 2S-LGBTQ+ people and mental health, with the hopes of providing attendees with the most up to date and evidence-based information.

“Giving 2S-LGBTQ+ youth and adults accurate information empowers them to make informed decisions when it come to their wellbeing, and being able to advocate for themselves and others,” said Heidi Eisenhauer, executive director of Réseau ACCESS Network. “We really hope that Classroom Closet will support 2S-LGBTQ+ youth in the north and help them become thoughtful, informed, and caring adults.”

Registration for the conference is free with lunch provided. High school students and teachers can register for the conference through eventbrite by clicking here.
