Close to 100 speeding tickets handed out during road safety week

Officers crack down on aggressive, distracted, and impaired driving

Greater Sudbury Police charged 78 drivers with speeding during Canada Road Safety Week (May 16-22).

During Canada Road Safety Week, GSPS traffic management unit officers and uniform patrol officers participated in the enhanced traffic enforcement initiative with an increased focus on aggressive, distracted and impaired driving, as well as the use of seatbelts and child restraints.

The goal of Canada Road Safety Week is to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s highways. 

Mobile and stationary speed enforcement, along with RIDE checks were conducted throughout Greater Sudbury, resulting in the following charges:

  • Speeding - 78
  • Impaired driving - 4
  • Driving with a suspended licence - 13
  • Driving while using a hand-held communications device - 5
  • Driving while not wearing a seatbelt - 10
  • Other provincial offences - 61
  • Insurance Act charges (failure to surrender insurance or no insurance surrendered) - 33
  • Stunt driving - 0

"It is Our Shared Commitment to keep our roadways safe for all those travelling every day of the year. Please remember to never drink and drive, always use seatbelts and child restraints every time you travel in a motor vehicle, and pay attention to the road," said a GSPS news release.

"Distracted and aggressive driving may lead to a collision that could be easily avoided."
