The Coalition nord-ontarienne pour une université de langue française said it is winding down its activities.

This is following the Université de Sudbury’s recent announcement that it will offer programs in partnership with the University of Ottawa starting in the fall of 2025.

The coalition was formed the day after Laurentian University abolished 28 French-language undergraduate and graduate programs in April 2021.

It campaigned for the creation of an entirely French-language university for Northern Ontario and supported the Université de Sudbury’s efforts to obtain such a status.

“On behalf of my colleagues who contributed to our work, I would like to thank the 23 community organizations that supported the creation of the Coalition and our actions over the past few years,” said its spokesperson, Denis Constantineau, in a press release.

“We extend our best wishes for success to all the entities and individuals involved in French-language post-secondary education in our region.”

The Coalition will entrust its archives to the ACFO du Grand Sudbury, which will eventually transfer them to Ottawa University’s Centre de recherche sur les francophonies canadiennes.
