Collège Boréal has launched a new plumbing program geared to students studying in French.
The plumbing technician program will be offered at Boréal’s Sudbury campus starting this coming September. It’s the only French-language program of its kind in Ontario.
Offered over three sessions (one year), the training stands out because it integrates plumbing techniques and skills acquired through by completing various projects and labs that support concepts learned in the classroom.
As part of the program, students gain the necessary skills based on industry practices to work as a plumbing technician for a company or on a construction site, all while respecting Ontario codes and regulations. Students who successfully complete Boréal’s plumbing technician program will earn an Ontario College Diploma.
In an April 13 news release, Boréal said it launched the course as a response to a market analysis predicting a coming shortage of skilled trades.
“Before launching a new program, we make sure to conduct a comprehensive analysis of market trends and employability rates,” said Tina Montgomery, dean of Boréal’s school of trades and applied technology, in the release.
“The average age of a tradesperson in Canada is 40-50. By 2020, the country is predicted to have a shortage of one million tradespersons.”
Collège Boréal also offers a plumbing apprenticeship program.
The plumber trade is regulated by the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009. Qualified individuals may obtain a Certificate of Qualification, which confirms its holder has the skills, knowledge and experience that meet industry standards of practice for the trade.
