Teachers, librarians and counsellors at Ontario's 24 community colleges formed picket lines this morning as last-minute contract talks weren't successful before the midnight deadline.

About 6,000 students in Greater Sudbury are affected by the strike. With a little more than a month left in the school year, the academic year for many students is in jeopardy if the strike is prolonged.

Classes at Cambrian have been suspended although the college will remain open. Students are free to cross picket lines if they wish. Students are advised to keep an eye on their Student 411 portal for strike information.

Students are being advised, through the Cambrian College website, not to withdrawal from their programs at this time and that the college is doing everything it can to help meet learning outcomes for this year.

In Sudbury, 240 faculty at Cambrian College and 110 faculty at College Boréal are involved.

Students at Boréal started their March Break this week and aren't yet significantly affected. However, classes will be cancelled next week if the strike continues.

Talks broke off after union negotiators tried to bargain changes to the collective agreement that would provide for smaller classes and more faculty so students would get more time, attention and feedback.
