College has deficit

Cambrian College's $2.9 million deficit for the upcoming academic year can be attributed to provincial funding, salary increases and enrolment, explains Sonia Del Missier, vice-president of academics.
Cambrian College's $2.9 million deficit for the upcoming academic year can be attributed to provincial funding, salary increases and enrolment, explains Sonia Del Missier, vice-president of academics.

"We don't whine and whine to the government about being under funded. We always said we need more money but instead we take more students - we have a public obligation and we don't turn anyone away," said Del Missier.

Cambrian faces the challenge of recruiting students because the population of the north has decreased in the past six year. Schools are funded based on enrolment.

The college will try to balance its books by closing down certain parts of the college during the summer.
