The Rainbow District School Board is looking into building a new elementary-level French immersion school in Val Caron.

The new Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 school would house students from Valley View Public School and Val Caron Public School. Both schools are currently overcrowded and lack library facilities.

The School Valuation Committee, which is looking into the construction project, has already held two public consultation meetings.

The committee's third and final meeting will be held March 2 at 7 pm at Valley View Public School in Val Caron.

The new facility would be built on the grounds of Valley View Public School in time for the beginning of the 2007/2008 school year, and the old school would eventually be demolished.

Val Caron Public School would also be closed when the new school opens.

"The School Valuation Committee is evaluating the benefits of a new school for students, the community, the local economy and the public school system," said school board chair Dena Morrison.

"We encourage all stakeholders to continue to provide input on how best to respond to the educational needs of the community in clean, modern and accessible facilities that provide a positive learning environment for all students."

The new school, which would house 500 students, would have space for physical education, instrumental music, visual arts, computer technology, a library and special education.

There would also be space for before and after school programs and a full daycare program in response to community needs. The building would be energy efficient and more cost-effective to operate.
