The Northwest Fudge Factory and Bestech have been named by the Yellow Pages Group as the recipients of the Make It Real program in Sudbury.
The program is a new initiative that recognizes and rewards Canadian small businesses that are dedicated to improving the communities they serve.
Businesses with less than 50 employees that demonstrated an outstanding contribution to their communities were eligible for a cash prize to be shared by the company and the charity of their choice. A local panel of community leaders judged the entries and identified the winners.
Northwest Fudge Factory, owned and operated by Chantelle Gorham, was awarded the $5,000 Platinum prize for dedication and contribution to communities in Levack and Greater Sudbury. The business is active in the community and regularly donates volunteer time and coordinates fundraising activities such as their annual Fudge Fest that supports the Onaping Lions Club.
“Community involvement is so important,” said Gorham in a news release. "Our local community has tons of spirit, and my focus is on our young people as they are our future. I want them to remember that Levack and the City of Greater Sudbury are great places to grow up so we've organized events to create positive memories and to get the community together."
As part of the Platinum award, the Onaping Falls Youth Fund, an organization that promotes local youth through sports, scholarships and youth related activities, was awarded $1,500.
The $2,500 Gold prize was awarded to Bestech, a Sudbury-based engineering and software development firm, for their voluntary efforts with the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Alzheimer’s Society of Sudbury, World Vision and the Canadian Cancer Society. A donation of $1,000 has been made to Dynamic Earth.
