Friends of local paramedic and cyclist Ashley Dieks, who is undergoing cancer treatment for multiple myeloma, have organized a Sept. 11 fundraiser to help Dieks financially through her cancer fight.

Many Sudburians are preparing to show their support for Ashley Dieks, a local paramedic and cyclist who was diagnosed earlier this year with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Friends have organized a community cycling event set for Sunday, Sept. 11. Organizers are encouraging people to grab their bikes and head over to the Garson Arena to join Beacon 2022 Ride for Ashley on that day. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

Organizers said the cycling event has something for everyone with several riding loops for novice riders as well as those hard-pedaling pavement pounders who can handle the longer rides. The 60K start time is 10 a.m. while the 20K route start time is 1 p.m. The 5K route start is at 1:30 p.m.

"Active bodybuilder, business owner, paramedic, cyclist, community supporter, beautiful daughter, sister, aunt, and partner; Ashley Dieks is a role model to many, and embodies the spirit of our community," is how friends have described her on the official website.

Close friends advise that chemotherapy treatments for Dieks began in June (a 16-week process), followed by stem cell harvesting and transplant set for late October 2022. The fundraiser effort is designed to help Ashley with the costs associated with her treatment and recovery.

The Beacon 2022 Ride will be guided by the teams from Manitoulin-Sudbury paramedics and the Greater Sudbury Police Service. The cycling day will include a post-ride event with food and drinks from 46 North Brewing, along with prizes and smiles. All loops start and finish at the Garson Community Centre and Arena. Helmets are mandatory.

Those who are not able to make the ride are still able to make a donation if they so choose. Organizers have set up a donation page for that specific purpose.
