The next time someone dials before they dig, they just might be calling someone in Sudbury.

Ontario One Call is building a location on The Kingsway and plans to hire 30 people for full-time work. The company is a non-profit established in 1996 as the main centre for companies and others to call to ensure the area where they're about to excavate doesn't have buried cables or other underground infrastructure.

“We’re very excited to open our Sudbury office this spring,” Ben Hamilton, executive director of Ontario One Call, said in an email to sudbury.com. “It’s a growing city with a diverse work force and a high number of bilingual employees, which is an important part of our province-wide service.”

Ontario One Call has grown significantly since 2012 with the passage of the Ontario Underground Notification System Act. The legislation made it mandatory for all owners of buried infrastructure to join the system.

The company's main office is in Guelph, which houses both a contact centre with up to 50 agents working at one time, plus corporate staff.

In Sudbury, most of the jobs will be customer service agents handling inbound calls, as well as a few supervisors. Hiring begins in March.

“We are building a new state-of-the-art facility on Kingsway Boulevard,” Hamilton said in the email. “It’s a great location in a rapidly developing part of town.”

The news come on the heels of Millennium1 Solutions' announcement earlier this month that they will hire up to 250 people by this summer and take over 25,000 square feet at a large building on 80 National St., off Maley Drive in New Sudbury. The company aims to have 350 working in the city by the end of the year.
