Tickets for an ambitious benefit concert to aid victims of the horrific tsunami in southeast Asia are now on sale.

Dr. Sham Merali visited tsunami ravaged Sri Lanka in the months following the disaster.
Dr. Brian Lynch, who is organizing the benefit concert with Dr. Sham Merali, said tickets are now available at the Sudbury Arena box office.

The concert will be a spectacular evening of international folk music and dance with participation of more than 100 performers representing the Greater Sudbury multicultural community.

Special guest performers are the Sri Lankan Apsara Dancers who are traveling from Vancouver to entertain.

Ambassador C. S. Poolokasingham, Sri Lankan High Counsel, will attend and open the concert.

Merali and Lynch have organized a non-profit organization called Tsunami Rx. The Tsunami Rx Benefit Concert will take place Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Sudbury Arena. The concert will begin at 7 pm.

Ticket prices are being kept at a minimum in hopes of attracting a large audience, said Lynch.

?We've decided to set the ticket price at $15 and by keeping the price down, we think we'll get more people to come out and support the cause,? he said.

Since announcing details about the benefit concert in early October, the response from Sudbury's corporate community has been overwhelming, said Lynch.

?The response has been amazingly supportive,? he said.

The fundraising goal for the benefit concert remains at $100,000, with all proceeds going towards building a new technical school in the province of Galle in Sri Lanka, an area devastated by the tsunami, said Lynch.

At least 10 multicultural folk and arts groups from Greater Sudbury will perform as well as the Sri Lankan dance troupe.

Merali has been on at least one humanitarian mission each year over the past 15 years and visited Sri Lanka following the tsunami this past February.

Greater Sudbury citizens and the medical and pharmaceutical community donated $5,300 in cash and more than $20,000 in medical supplies for that trip.

Merali and his son Hasan helped repair a school during that trip and came up with the idea of building a new technical school in Sri Lanka several months ago.

Members of the public can purchase tickets by calling the Sudbury Arena box office at 671-3000 or on-line at www.greatersudbury.ca Tickets are also available at Lynch's office on Lasalle Boulevard and Merali's office on Regent Street. A concert telephone line has been set up at 525-1653.
