Conference on sexual assault in schools

Greater Sudbury Police, in partnership with the four local school boards, is hosting a two-day Students Leading Students conference on sexual assault and relationship violence.

The conference takes place March 1 and 2, 2006 at the Holiday Inn, Regent St.

In surveys, high school students identified sexual assault and relationship violence as two disturbing issues that they were, and are, dealing with too often. From those results, a request for funding was submitted, and in October 2005 Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci announced the allocation of the required funds.

The conference is the kick-off for a two-month awareness campaign that will address the issues of sexual assault and relationship violence in local high schools and the community. The campaign will reach 10,000 high school students in the city.

The main guest speaker at the conference will be Dawna Speers. On October 7, 1991 Speers received the tragic news that her 19 year old daughter Monica was fatally stabbed by her former boyfriend. Speers has since shared this horrific story with other students and also promotes the program, Choices for Positive Youth Relationships, in order to prevent others from experiencing what she has lived through.
