Coroner investigating sudden death of teen girl near Ste. Anne-des-Pins church

Cause of death under investigation

The sudden death of a 17-year-old girl on or near the grounds of a downtown church is under investigation, Greater Sudbury Police told Sudbury.com today.

The teen's body was located in an area off of Beech Street near Ste. Anne-des-Pins church in downtown Sudbury. The area was taped off by police Tuesday morning.

A blanket, tarp and sleeping pad were located inside of the grassy taped-off area next to a religious statue.

While Sudbury.com was on scene at around 11:30 a.m., the person's body had already been removed, and there was a single Greater Sudbury Police squad car guarding the site.

While reporters were there, officers removed the police tape.

In an email, Greater Sudbury Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn confirmed officers were there for a sudden death investigation, and the scene has since been released.

She said the person who died was a 17-year-old girl.

Police are working in collaboration with the coroner's office, and will provide support throughout the coroner's investigation, she said.

“A post-mortem is being conducted through the Coroner’s Office in order to determine the cause of death,” Dunn said.
