City councillors voted unanimously in favour of spending $570,000 to improve the Walden Industrial Park at a city council meeting July 12.

The park, which is owned and operated by the city, is home to 45 mining service and supply companies. The money will be spent on an illuminated sign, landscaping at the park’s entrance, improvements to ditches, and the re-surfacing of part of a road.

Ward 4 Councillor Ted Callaghan said council made the right decision because the companies in the park add a lot to Greater Sudbury’s economy.

“When you look around there, the businesses are there for the long haul. We’ll be gone and forgotten, and the businesses will still be there,” he said.

Ward 1 Councillor Terry Kett was pleased the funding was approved, but said council should also consider bringing water and sewer connections to nearby Fielding Rd., where 900 people work every day.

“I’ve been working on this for years, but every time I bring it up, I seem to fall flat on my face,” he said. “I’d like to see something happen in the next 10 years."
