Ward 12 candidate Will Brunette held a clean-up of the trails from the Flour Mill to the Adanac Ski Hill last weekend, and he was shocked by the large amount of garbage he found there.

Will Brunette There wasn't just Tim Horton's cups, plastic bags and candy wrappers lying on the ground. He also found tires, shopping carts and building materials like bricks he thinks were illegally dumped by a local contractor.

Volunteers removed approximately half of ton of debris and hauled it to a muncipal landfill site. Perhaps people wouldn't be tempted to dump garbage in the bush if there weren't tipping fees at landfill sites, says Brunette.

“That's the issue I have with council. If you keep charging people tipping fees, it's our environment that's going to pay for it and that's what's been happening,” he says.

“We're trying to promote the environment, we're having clean-a-thons in schools, and kids walk into a trail and they see contractors polluting the environment? It's also the regular Joes that use the trail and throw their shopping carts in there.”

Brunette can be contacted at 675-7621 or [email protected].
