Council holds public hearing on water rate increases

The city is proposing changes to a bylaw that would increase water and wastewater rates currently in effect in Greater Sudbury, and is giving the public a chance to have their say at a public hearing Wednesday.

The city is proposing changes to a bylaw that would increase water and wastewater rates currently in effect in Greater Sudbury, and is giving the public a chance to have their say at a public hearing Wednesday.

In accordance with the city?s Water and Wastewater Rates Policy, rates are to be established each year at a level which will allow for full recovery of the costs of providing water and wastewater services.

It is proposed that the water rates for consumption charges will increase by 5.9 percent. Fixed water charges will increase by 3.4 percent and waste water charges will be 115 percent of the water charges. This results in an overall increase of 4.5 percent. Residents interested in making verbal presentations before city council during the hearing can have their name added to the list of speakers by phoning the city clerk's office at 671-2489, ext. 2471. Speakers may also register at city hall prior to the meeting.

The public hearing takes place Wednesday Jan. 18 in the council chamber at Tom Davies Square at 7 pm.
