The incumbent councillor for Ward 1 says beautification and property standards — from neglected properties to flower beds to cracks in sidewalks — must be a priority.

In a news release this week, Mark Signoretti commended all those in the city who work to keep the Nickel City looking its best.

“I would like to take this time and commend all the CANs, cleanup campaign organizers, individuals and businesses, playground associations, community garden groups, lake stewardship organizations, and our wonderful Parks staff, and others, for continuing a tradition of beautification in Greater Sudbury. We are world famous for our re-greening efforts of the last many decades that have positively shifted the world’s view of our City. We have a lot to be proud of.”

While bylaw officers do good work, Signoretti said property standards must be enforced and “eyesore” properties must be brought up to the standard.

Continuing a History of Beautification and Pride

I would like to take this time and commend all the CANs, clean up campaign organizers, individuals and businesses, playground associations, community garden groups, lake stewardship organizations, and our wonderful Parks staff, and others, for continuing a tradition of beautification in Greater Sudbury. We are world famous for our re-greening efforts of the last many decades that have positively shifted the world’s view of our City. We have a lot to be proud of.

I am a strong believer that the work of making our city more attractive never ends. We as a city government have a role to play in this regard. Our volunteers, local citizenry groups, and individuals must be supported in their vital work. I sincerely can state, that over the past almost four years I have come to understand my role as a facilitator in working with people to promote neighbourhood livability. I have loved to witness projects come to fruition in our ward, and am glad that I was able to assist local efforts in any way I could.

I see specific ways that the city can further elicit civic pride, and showcase Greater Sudbury to visitors as a world-class city, which we are. The Parks Department has talented people whose exquisite work can be seen across the city in our boulevards, certain intersections, planters, flowerbeds, and parks. I support our people doing more of this work.

Our committed bylaw officers must also continue enforcing our property standard bylaws consistently, fairly, and equitably. Obviously, as is the norm, people and businesses will be given a time period to rectify any violations, but all breeches of our bylaws must be enforced. If graffiti goes up, it must go down immediately. If a property becomes an “eye sore”, it must be brought to acceptable standards. If a building permit is open, the work must be completed in a reasonable time.

I also want to build on my predecessor’s re-greening work on Lorne Street. With the then newly formed CAN, and partnership with Weston’s Bakery, the re-greening of a substantial part of Lorne Street began. Existing businesses in the area also came onboard, and beautified voluntarily their properties.

Site plan agreements for new properties ensure greening and vegetation, but it is important to work with existing businesses to help us shine as a city. As I push for the rest of Lorne Street to be reconstructed from Martindale Road to Elm Street, I will lead efforts to work with CP, which owns the lands south and north of their tracks to the curb lines, to work with us on further greening that busy corridor.

Lastly, as a council we must never lose sight of the fact, that besides the big road projects, we must provide the direction that smaller fixes such as replacing cracked sidewalks and curbs are also important.

I end by thanking again all those who work to make our city a vibrant and attractive place to work, live, and play.
