The Kingsway Entertainment District project, if it proceeds, means hundreds of jobs for unionized workers, says Ward 11 candidate Kevin Lalonde in a news release.

Highlighting how support for labour unions is a big part of the city’s history, Lalonde said the casino project means 300 new union jobs, while the construction of the project alone means good jobs for many people.

“The KED development will be bid on by three short-listed companies that all use unionized trade workers,” Lalonde said. “For awhile now, we have seen some trade unionized members having to leave home during the week to go to other cites where the work takes them. Nothing new, quite common for workers to leave on Sunday come back Thursday night.”

Lalonde said in his view the city’s economy is stagnant while a segment of those working in trades have to leave Sudbury to work, leaving some of their salaries behind in the places they’re staying.

“Ask any worker that has a family if they would like the opportunity to stay in town for awhile and work here and 90 per cent will say yes,” he said. “I don't think I can imagine any union member in the city of Sudbury today that would not want to see these good paying jobs and their economic benefits come to fruition within in this city.”
