Crafty brews hyping up the annual beer fest

Annual Elgin Street beer fest returns with a bang (and a fizz)

Downtown Sudbury is usually the place to be on a nice summer evening, but add beer to the mix and it is guaranteed to draw a crowd.

And the Elgin Street Craft Beer Festival did fill to do just that.

Rick Maloney, has been a regular at the beer fest for the past five years, and this year he was back showing his support once again.

“I think Ontario breweries do a phenomenal job and its important to come out and show some support to these breweries,” Maloney said.

Like Maloney, many Sudburians have been flocking to the street to get their hands on some ale.

“Every year the response has been overwhelming and so we are trying to take it up a notch this year,” Veronica Desjardins, one of the minds behind the popular event, told Sudbury.com.

“We started with a soft launch on Friday, with some live entertainment and today is a chance for all beer lovers to come out try brews from some 25 different breweries and have fun,” she said.

The beer however wasn't the only thing in which residents could indulge. Various live performances kept folks entertained while sipping suds.

“We are hoping that with each year we continue to grow and hopefully we can expand to a much bigger space and add more local musicians to our ever-growing family,” Desjardins said.

The fest represented many familiar local and Ontario brewers, such as the Stack, Sawdust, Norse, while also adding some international brands and a local distillery to the mix.

“We have seen a huge response form various breweries who want to be a part of this festival, which is good sign of things we are doing right,” Desjardins said.

The annual beer fest packed a tad bit more flavour as it focused on sour beers and other fruity pairings. For many festival regulars this was welcome.

“I have been coming for a few of years now, and first couple years I didn’t find something that I enjoyed,” Kaitlinn Katzur said.

“This year however they have a lot of sour beers that I truly enjoy and it’s a beautiful day to come out and meet people while I try some beers,” Katzur added.
