Police and emergency crews responded to a fire at a residence on Mallard's Landing Drive in the city's south end on Tuesday afternoon.
A Sudbury.com reader sent a photo of smoke billowing from the home at around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Acting deputy fire chief Jesse Oshell confirmed that a call came in to Greater Sudbury Fire Services at around 4:30 p.m. about a deck that was on fire at home on Mallard's Landing Drive.
"When crews arrived on scene, the fire on the deck had extended to the home," said Oshell. "It was going through the back wall of the house and to the roof."
At this time, fire services have not determined the cause of the fire. A family was inside the home at the time that the fire started and did get out of their home safely.
"We're going to conduct a search of the home as soon as it's safe to do so. We were able to protect the neighbouring homes so that the fire did not spread," said Oshell.
"We're aware that there might be two cats (inside the home), and based on what we've been able to do so far and what we've seen inside for smoke we're hopeful that the cats were able to make their way to the basement and we'll have a good chance of getting them out."
There are no damage estimates at this time.
