Cross-Canada trek raises awareness about murdered, missing aboriginal women

Sudbury police join First Nations man in 5K local run

Brad Firth, who goes by the name Caribou Legs, brought his campaign to raise awareness about missing and murdered Aboriginal women to Greater Sudbury on Tuesday.

Caribou Legs is running across Canada to bring attention to the cause. He left Vancouver on May 8 and aims to reach St. John's in November.

His five-kilometre run in Sudbury was unique because he was joined by members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, the first time a police force has joined him since he began his run.

While coming from a family of successful athletes, Caribou Legs battled addiction several years ago, living in the same troubled areas of Vancouver as many of the First Nations victims of serial killer Robert Pickton.

On the advice from an elder, he beat addiction through running and began participating in marathons.

Last year, Caribou Legs ran 3,800 kilometres – Vancouver to Ottawa – to deliver a letter urging MPs to protect Yukon's Peel Watershed.

His run this year has personal meaning for him, because his sister was killed as a result of domestic violence.
