The Greater Sudbury Cubs further solidified their spot as the top team in the Northern Ontario Hockey League with a 6-2 win over the Espanola Paper Kings on Saturday.

During the away game, an NOJHL media release credits Espanola with securing the game’s first goal, when player Will Bishop “put one towards the net from the right point that looked to hit off a Greater Sudbury defenceman and move the other way by the Cubs’ starter, Noah Metivier.”

The Cubs tied things a couple minutes later, when Marshall McCharles hit the net.

The Greater Sudbury team secured a winning position the Espanola team never recovered from. On a two-man advantage, Greater Sudbury’s Samuel Assinewai steered a pass sent in by Oliver Smith 31 seconds into the second period.

A few minutes after that, the Cubs’ McCharles added his second goal of the evening by “neatly tipping in a Cole Quevillon shot from just inside the blueline,” according to the media release.

Although Espanola’s Lucas Signoretti landed another goal in the second period, the Cubs’ Pierson Sobush, Cameron Shanks and Cole Crowder each hit the net by the time the game ended, firmly establishing the Cubs as the dominant team.

The win saw the Cubs improve to 29-5-2-0 on the season, while the Paper Kings fell to 16-14-2-2 in defeat.

The Cubs’ next game will be at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex on Jan. 12, when they face off against the Powassan Voodoos. The Cubs’ last match against the Voodoos saw the Greater Sudbury team win 5-2.

Of the seven games between the Cubs and Voodoos so far this season, the Cubs have won five times and the Voodoos have won twice.
