According to a joint press release issued yesterday (April 8), Inco and Falconbridge are launching separate 24-hour telephone lines and websites to keep residents informed about dispersion conditions.

Dispersion conditions measure the potential for ground level concentrations of sulphur dioxide. When dispersion conditions are good, ground level concentrations should not occur. When dispersion conditions are poor, corrective action is taken.

"A lot of attention is paid to how much we emit and how much we invest to lower those emissions. But little is known about the time and effort spent daily to monitor atmospheric conditions so our operations do not negatively impact the community," said Pat Thompson, Inco's manager of safety, health and environment.

In a control order earlier this year, the Ministry of the Environment advised both mining companies to implement a public notification system.

"It's all about communication and understanding," said Mark Butler, environmental co-ordinator at Falconbridge. "Our phone lines will be updated daily and our websites will have links to air-quality monitoring stations across the community. We want people to understand how we operate and the importance we place on operating responsibly."
