The Municipality of French River saw its first fatality from a fire in at least eight years after a man was killed in a blaze Monday afternoon.

A man in his mid-40s was killed in a single-family home on Wolseley Bay Road, east of Noelville.

West Nipissing Fire Chief Richard Maranda said three people lived in the home – and two were there at the time of the fire.

A woman was able to escape from the fire.

While the fire occurred near Noelville, and the French River Fire Department was first to arrive at the scene, the home fell under the jurisdiction of the West Nipissing Fire Department.

When West Nipissing firefighters arrived at the scene, they were able to relieve the French River Fire Department from its duties.

But Maranda said because there was a fatality the Office of the Fire Marshal has taken over the investigation.
He added an autopsy has already been performed on the man.

Sudbury.com has contacted the Office of the Fire Marshal for more details about the man's death but has not yet received a response.
