A group of roughly 25 Sudburians marched up the Bridge of Nations on Oct. 9 in a demonstration to support members of Six Nations of the Grand River who are embroiled in a land dispute.
The dispute has been ongoing for months on the outskirts of Caledonia where a developer is looking to build more than 200 homes.
Those against the development have said the land in question was never ceded and that the housing development did not receive community consent, despite an agreement between the developer and the Six Nations elected council.
Friday's display was organized by a local group called Planet Over Profit, an organization that aims to recognize the interconnectedness of Indigenous land struggles and the struggles of other marginalized groups including Black Lives Matter .
"We formed at the beginning of the Wet'suwet'en land dispute and really any time we get a call out from the nation to put on a demonstration like this, we'll gather," said Selena Wabegijik, a member of Planet Over Profit who attended Friday's demonstration.
"It's an inclusive group of people fighting for the same thing. It's not strictly Indigenous; we have non-Indigenous supporters, Black Lives Matter and others."
The group's aim is to spread information while standing in solidarity with those disputing the development near Caledonia.
"We marched up the bridge and we're hanging a banner. We don't want to be radical or make this into a protest or anything like that," said Wabegijik. "I find that art is far more impactful and resonates more than protest."
