Discount services aimed at controlling pet population

Greater Sudbury pet owners have access to discount coupons providing $115 off the cost of spaying and $65 off the cost of neutering a dog or cat.

Greater Sudbury pet owners have access to discount coupons providing $115 off the cost of spaying and $65 off the cost of neutering a dog or cat.

A limited number of spay and neuter coupons are available at citizen service centres in Capreol, Chelmsford, Dowling, Garson, Hanmer and Lively and Tom Davies Square in Sudbury on a first- come, first served basis. To qualify for a coupon, citizens must ensure that their dog or cat is registered with the city.

The coupon program is an initiative of volunteers serving on the Animal Control Advisory Panel to help address animal overpopulation in the community. Since the program's introduction in September last year, more than 1,000 discount coupons have been distributed.

The program is funded at no cost to ratepayers through revenues generated by dog and cat registration fees. Dog and cat registration tags are available at Citizen Service Centres, public libraries, animal control services and at participating animal clinics and pet food stores.

The cost for a regular pet licence is $30; $15 for a spayed or neutered pet; and $15 for dog and cat owners who are senior citizens. Pets should be registered no later than Dec. 31.
