Door-to-door scammer posing as GS Utilities agent

Greater Sudbury Utilities has received reports of a door-to-door salesperson wearing a "Just Energy" logo misrepresenting himself as an agent for the company.

The salesperson was reported to be in the Westmount Avenue area of New Sudbury this week, says Greater Sudbury Utilities.

A customer claimed the fraudulent salesperson told people he is acting under Greater Sudbury Utilities' authority and must view residents' bills for energy efficiency deductions.

He has apparently said he represents the root company that sells services to GSU, and that his company is responsible for Greater Sudbury Utilities. None of this information is true.

Greater Sudbury Utilities, and its group of companies — Greater Sudbury Hydro, Agilis and @Home Energy — never goes door to door.

“If we're at your door, it's because you've called to report a problem, or we're advising that we're doing work in the area which may affect your service,” the company said in a release.

The company also never asks for customer account information or bills at their door.

“If you're our customer, we already have access to that information, but we treat your account information according to MFIPPA guidelines, so even our staff only have access on a 'need to know' basis,” it said.

Greater Sudbury Utilities does not have a relationship with Just Energy.

The company said it has reported the alleged fraudulent activity to the Greater Sudbury Police Services, but in the meantime urges its customers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
