Greater Sudbury Police Service has shut down Shroomyz Magic Mushroom Dispensary in downtown Sudbury after a few days’ operation.
The shop opened at 59 Elm St. on Saturday, and police visited the shop on Tuesday morning.
Sudbury.com requested an interview with a member of GSPS through spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn on Monday and reiterated on Wednesday, but the request was not granted.
Instead, Dunn sent the following written statement:
“Officers attended the business yesterday morning and spoke with the store manager. The store is closed and officers will continue to monitor the store to ensure compliance.”
As Dunn did not grant an interview nor provided additional information, it’s unclear whether any charges were laid and why police shut the shop down on Tuesday morning, a few days after it first opened on Saturday. Even before its opening, a sign on the building advertised the business’s intentions in a manner that made it obvious what it would be.
“Walk into a new reality” is painted across the business’s windows, under a large Shroomyz sign.
Psilocybin and psilocin (magic mushrooms) are hallucinogens and the sale, production and possession of them is illegal in Canada, unless authorized by Health Canada. As such, shops such as Shroomyz break the law.
Despite this, Shroomyz has several dispensaries open in southern Ontario as part of a growing movement supporting the therapeutic and recreational use of magic mushrooms. This was their first Greater Sudbury location.
Sudbury.com will update this story in the event Greater Sudbury Police Service chooses to grant our interview request.
We have also reached out to representatives at Shroomyz for comment.
