Rainbow Schools will welcome Earth Day with a full-day workshop featuring internationally recognized speaker Dr. Bryan Smith on Friday, April 20, 2007, at the Howard Johnson Hotel on Brady Street. Principals, teachers and custodial staff will move towards developing a strategic framework for sustainability in Rainbow Schools.

The workshop will begin at 9 am with presentations by representatives from elementary and secondary schools who will share their success stories.

"A number of energy and environmental activities are currently underway in our schools," said Diane Cayen-Arnold, Superintendent of Business for Rainbow District School Board, in a release.

"We are working diligently to decrease the amount of energy being used and resources being consumed in our schools, with positive results."

Following the school presentations, Dr. Bryan Smith, President of Broad Reach Innovations, will   inspire participants to build on their efforts. (His presentation will begin at 9:50 am). An author and consultant, Dr. Smith helps organizations create a shared vision for sustainability within the global context.

"He will share his expertise so we can implement a Board-wide strategic plan for our sustainability efforts," added Cayen-Arnold.

In the afternoon, Ameresco Canada will lead a presentation for custodial staff on the new energy efficient products currently being implemented in Rainbow Schools. Ameresco is an energy services company that provides innovative systems, strategies and technology for energy conservation. This presentation will take place from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.

Waterless urinals, energy efficient boilers, and real time energy meters that manage electrical loads are among the new technologies being implemented by Rainbow District School Board. The Board is also looking to phase in building automation systems and introduce geothermal energy as part of its strategic framework for sustainability. Within the next five years, all schools will be retrofitted with energy efficient fixtures.
