An early morning fire call sent 15 firefighters from three fire stations racing to a home in Chelmsford today.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services got the call around 5:04 a.m. about a fire on Dumas Lane in Chelmsford. The volunteer crews with assistance from a fire truck from the downtown station battled the blaze, which turned out to be a basement fire.

Because the fire occurred in the basement, flame and smoke damage was severe — fire burns up, the on-duty platoon chief reminded Sudbury.com this morning.

The three-storey duplex in which the fire occurred contained two units, as the name suggests. The fire affected only one of those units.

One person was evacuated from the home, while the fire displaced three people. No one was injured.

GSFS suspects the cause of the fire to be electrical. The fire safety message the service always includes with fire reports to media advises using only CSA-approved electrical devices, and limiting the use of extension cords.
