Record number of impaired drivers during month of December:

A spike in the number of arrests of people for impaired driving have police scratching their heads about why so many people are making such bad decisions. Between Nov. 30 and Dec. 31, 23 people were charged with driving under the influence in the city, a record for December. That compares to 11 last year during the same period, and seven in 2014. More from last week's Police Services Board meeting can be found here.

Laurentian University sign vandalized:

The prominent Laurentian University sign marking the entrance to the campus at Ramsey Lake Road has been vandalized. Alex Freedman, chief of staff to LU president Dominic Giroux, confirmed the defaced sign was discovered sometime Monday morning. The vandals spray-painted the sign with a hammer and sickle, a common symbol of communism, along with a large dollar sign and the phrase "Our education is not for profit!" Freedman said there is no information as to who committed the act of vandalism. Read the full story here.

Thibeault enters fray in O'Leary/Wynne war of words:

Sudbury MPP and Ontario Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault has waded into a war of words between Kevin O'Leary and Premier Kathleen Wynne. In his open letter to O'Leary, Thibeault said he was responding to “a number of troubling false statements and I felt compelled to respond; because I believe that facts still matter in Ontario."  You can find more on this war of words, including Thibeault's letter in its entirety here.

Committee OKs new campsites for Richard Lake:

Meeting on Monday, the city's planning committee approved additional campsites for Richard Lake, despite objections from some neighbours in the area. However, developer Armand Charbonneau has approval for just 12 of the 32 new sites until a new private sewage system is in place. In additional to the sewage system, the developer also must build a chain link fence along the northern portion of the land and limit building on the property to the approved site and a chalet. The chalet will go in the former welcome centre the city operated on the site. Check back with Sudbury.com later today for more on this story.
