Ontario's first balanced budget in decade promises billions in health care:

Ontario's Liberal government is promising to inject billions of new dollars into health care in its first balanced budget in a decade, a fiscal plan designed to appeal to nearly everyone in the province ahead of an election next summer. Crafted by a party in power since 2003 that has been faring poorly in recent polls, the $141-billion budget tabled Thursday has measures targeted at both young and old, people who access the health-care system and anyone who owns or rents a home and pays an electricity bill. Remembering Michel Dallaire: Mourning the passing of an award-winning Sudbury writer:

The Nickel City literary community is mourning the death of award-winning Francophone author Michel Dallaire, who passed away suddenly April 25. Sudbury.com interviewed the 60-year-old several times over the years, most recently last October after he released two poetry books, bringing the total number of books he'd published in his lifetime to 18. In 2015, he won a couple of awards for his novel, In Violoncelle pour lune d’automne. He was presented with a French-language Trillium Award, as well as the Prix Christine Dumitriu-van-Saanen. Dallaire was nominated for the Trillium Award three times previously. Find the full story here.

Wanted federal inmate last seen in Sudbury: OPP

The Ontario Provincial Police Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad has issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of federal offender Elliott Sullivan. Sullivan, 36, is wanted for breach of parole. He is serving a four-year sentence for weapons trafficking, aggravated assault, break and enter, uttering death threats, theft under $5,000, fail to comply with undertaking and fail to appear. Sullivan is described as 5-foot-6 (170 cm), 125 lbs, (56 kg), with a slim build, hazel eyes, short brown hair, and he has several tattoos including a spider on his left hand, a cross on his left forearm, and barbed wire on his right wrist. The offender is known to frequent the Sudbury, Timmins, Toronto, London and Kingston areas. Sullivan was last seen in the Sudbury area, operating a brown 2006 Ford Escape SUV, bearing Ontario Licence BWAZ 689.

If you love coffee and home décor, there's a new cafe in downtown Sudbury you'll probably want to visit. The Cedar Nest Decor Cafe opened at 11 Cedar St. on April 8. It offers everything a typical cafe would, including hot drinks, baked goods, sandwiches and salads, but also sells home décor items such as wreaths and planters. Owner Suzette Peters describes her home décor style as “shabby chic” or “upscale country.” In keeping with the cafe's name, many of the items are bird-related. Find out more about the cafe here.

Arrest made after downtown stabbing:

Greater Sudbury Police arrested a man this afternoon near the downtown Sudbury Transit terminal following a stabbing. Police received a call about the incident at around 1:40 p.m. on April 27. Two men were involved in the incident and one man stabbed the other in the leg. The victim was transported to Health Sciences North with minor injuries. The suspect was arrested at the scene of the incident and taken into police custody.

Our Children, Our Future handed out its annual Champions for Children Awards Wednesday at a luncheon held at the United Steelworkers Hall. The organization, which works to develop and promote resources that nurture children, families and communities, has recognized individuals, groups and businesses who have made a difference in the live of children each year for the past 17 years.
