Erratic driving leads police to $28K in illicit drugs

In addition to illicit drugs, Greater Sudbury police found more than $15K in cash during a traffic stop

A motorist carrying $28,000 in illicit drugs drew attention to himself by driving erratically shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, police allege in a media release.

An officer conducting a general patrol in the area of Notre Dame Avenue witnessed a vehicle being driven erratically, according to a Greater Sudbury Police Service media release issued today.

The officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Notre Dame Avenue and King Street, where the motorist was determined to have been driving without a valid licence. 

An open bottle of alcohol was also spotted within the driver’s reach, according to police.

The driver was asked to exit the vehicle, and was placed under arrest.

A search of the vehicle yielded more than $15,000 in cash alongside $28,000 in illicit drugs, which included 280 grams of what was believed to have been cocaine and magic mushrooms. They also report finding multiple knives and drug packaging materials.

The driver, a 54-year-old man, was charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose 
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order x2 
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking 
  • Possession of a Schedule II Substance  
  • Careless Driving 
  • Driving While Under Suspension 
  • Operate Motor Vehicle No Insurance  
  • Drive Motor Vehicle with Unsealed Container of Liquor

The driver was held in custody overnight to appear in bail court on Christmas Eve to answer to the charges.

His passenger, a 49-year-old man, was charged with Possession of a Schedule One Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, and was released with a court date of Jan. 22.
