As residents in Greater Sudbury continue to practice social distancing Sudbury.com is putting together a weekly list of local virtual events and projects to keep families busy and offer some welcome distraction from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perogies and Cabbage Rolls
Mondays to Fridays

Fresh perogies and cabbage rolls are available for curb-side pick-up from Monday to Friday at the Ukranian Seniors’ Centre. Place your order by phoning 705-673-7404.

Day camp registration, YMCA of Northeastern Ontario 

The YMCA of Northeastern Ontario has announced registration has now opened for YMCA Summer Day Camp in the communities of North Bay, Sudbury and surrounding areas. More information on YMCA Summer Day Camp can be found here.

Cambrian College Visual Arts Grad Show

Even though their studies are over, the work of this year’s graduating class of Cambrian College’s Design and Visual Arts program will live on for another year, online. Every year, grad students in the program put on a year-end exhibit with their work on display at the college. This year, the COVID pandemic prompted the students and their professors to host their exhibit in the virtual world. You can now view the Design and Visual Arts Grad Show 2021 online here.

Northern Arts Festival 
May 22

If you’ve been missing live musical performances, Sudbury Performance Group has the solution in the form of the second edition of its Northern Arts Festival. It will livestream shows from The Coulson nightclub each Saturday evening. All performances run from 7-9 p.m. on Sudbury Performance Group’s Facebook page, and are free of charge for audiences. Coming up May 22 is Edouard Landry. 

Parents as Career Coaches digital seminar
May 27 

Cambrian College is welcoming parents/guardians and their children between grades 7-12 to attend Parents as Career Coaches, Thursday, May 27, at 6 p.m. This is a free, interactive, virtual workshop, presented on Zoom. This year’s keynote speaker is Paul Lafrance, the host of HGTV’s Home to Win, Custom Built, Decked Out, Disaster Decks, and Deck Wars, as well as one of the judges on Canada’s Handyman Challenge. Joining Paul Lafrance as a speaker is Colleen Heidman, a Digital Recruiter with Cambrian College. To learn more about the event and to register, visit Cambrian’s website.

Italian Republic Day Celebration
June 2

The Società Caruso celebrates La festa della Repubblica Italiana (Italian Republic Day) with a special takeout menu (while quantities last) on June 2. Menu No. 1: pasta and meatballs, salad, bun and cannoli for $23 / person or $87 for family size; Menu No. 2: polenta, fish Brodetto, salad, bun and cannoli for $25 / person or $95 per family. Relay for Life 
June 12

This year's Relay For Life in support of the Canadian Cancer Society will take place Saturday, June 12 at 8 p.m. The livestreamed opening ceremonies will be broadcast on Facebook, YouTube and YES TV stations across the country. People can relay in a park or in their living room. You can register for the Sudbury event online here.

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra world premiere 
June 19

The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra will present the world premiere of Andrzej Zubek’s Zubi-Rag — to be performed by the SSO’s String Quartet. However, the score will only be complete as bars are purchased as part of its Fille the Score fundraising campaign. They hope to present the ragtime-inspired concert June 19, depending on COVID-19 restrictions. For more information, visit SudburySymphony.com.
