Plans are in the works for a couple of events marking the one-year anniversary of Laurentian University’s Feb. 1, 2021 declaration of insolvency and filing for creditor protection under the Companies’ Creditors’ Arrangement Act (CCAA).

The Tricultural Committee for Post-secondary Education in Sudbury is holding a protest at the Ramsey Lake skating path between 4 and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 1.

“In order to peacefully protest against Laurentian's decision to invoke the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, we invite you to join us in person or remotely, to denounce the catastrophic consequences of this ongoing process, and to promote true tricultural democratic & equal university education at Sudbury,” said a press release from the committee.

If you're outside of Sudbury or unavailable during that time, you’re welcome to participate at a skating space near you and send the committee photos and videos of you skating with slogans. You can also share your picture on social media, using the hashtags #BREAKTHEICCAA.

“Together, let's denounce the legal skating that President Haché and his followers have been doing since February 1, 2021!” said a press release.

Send photos and videos to [email protected].

There will also be a virtual “teach-in” organized with the Canadian Federation of Students, with participation from students, former faculty members and staff.

Presenters will share their experiences at Laurentian University in the year since the legal proceedings surrounding the insolvency began.
