An international dance troupe will entertain hundreds of Greater Sudbury children this week.

Wildfire Dance Theatre, sponsored by the Baha?i Community of Greater Sudbury, will be performing free of charge. They performed at Sudbury Secondary on Tuesday, are at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary today and Lockerby Composite School on Friday.

Besides giving a live performance, the dance group will also run a workshop on dance and theatre with some of the classes.

Wildfire Dance Theatre will also be presenting a public performance on Saturday, May 4, at Thorneloe Theatre at Laurentian University at 8 pm. This performance is also free of charge.

The dance troupe is a non-profit, educational performing arts group whose youthful members, ages 17-22, from around the world, offer their services to enhance community awareness of critical social issue.

They integrate the energy and enthusiasm of youth with dance, music and drama, employing storytelling methods to portray various issues such as racial unity, the equality of men and women and the extremes of wealth and poverty.

They use various dance forms, such as hip hop, cultural dance, street jazz and slap dance to convey their messages.

Dancers come from many countries, including New Zealand, Germany, Scotland, England, the United States and Canada. Dance theatre is part of their curriculum at the Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute in Stratford.

Sudbury is the last stop on their tour of northern Ontario.

Francophone resources fair
The Parents? Council of Ecole Felix Ricard invites all the region?s francophone and francophile families to the first French Language Resources Fair today.

To mark Education Week, everyone is invited to the school on Lasalle Boulevard to discover the wealth of French-language resources available right here in Sudbury.

?The purpose of the fair is to enable parents to find out about the tools and resources that can make is easier for them to help their children pursue their education in French, said Ginette Vezina, president of the council.

Exhibitors will have a wide spectrum of products on display, including books, workbooks, software, educational games, Internet sites and information on French television programs.

Visitors will also be able to learn about the resources relating to new school curriculum and have the opportunity to meet specialists in various fields as well as other parents.

The event takes place Friday, May 1 from 5 to 8 pm.

WISE Olympics
The Sudbury chapter of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) is holding its third annual Science and Engineering Olympics on Saturday, May 4, from 9 am to 3:30 pm at College Boreal.

The event is sponsored by the Professional Engineers of Ontario.

The event is targeted at young women in the middle grades?Grades 4 to 8?and is designed to attract more than 100 students. A variety of female science and engineering professionals from the Sudbury region will be present.

Working in teams, students will participate in five separate hands-on experiments, from various science and engineering disciplines. Each experiment has its own scoring criteria based on teamwork, member participation, planning, documentation, ingenuity and creativity.
