Bitterly cold wind chills lead Environment Canada to issue an extreme cold warning for Greater Sudbury and the vicinity (File).

Greater Sudbury and the surrounding areas have been placed under an extreme cold warning by Environment Canada, due to dangerously low wind chill temperatures.

A prolonged period of -40 C to -45 C wind chills is expected to occur over much of Northern Ontario this morning, said a press release.

This bitterly cold Arctic airmass is expected to remain in place through the weekend, posing a risk for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors and those without proper shelter.

Individuals choosing to brace the cold are encouraged to dress in warm, wind resistant layers which can be easily removed should you overheat.

Layering is critical as "frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill," said Environment Canada.

"If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside"

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
