A Government of Canada investment of $11,319 will enable the Coniston Curling Club to transform its building into an all-season facility, helping to attract tourists to the area for sporting events and ensure this important community facility remains safe, efficient and welcoming to residents and visitors alike.

Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré made the announcement Jan. 19, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor.

“(This) announcement is an investment in our collective future and I’m thrilled that it will enable the people of Coniston and communities across the Nickel Belt region to enjoy this facility year-round," said Serré.

"This investment is critical to the sustainability and growth of the Coniston Curling Club and will leave a lasting legacy for the community as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations.”

Provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150), the investment will be used to upgrade the Club’s heating and cooling system by replacing two furnaces and installing a new water heating and air conditioning system.

“The Coniston Curling Club is an important local facility that plays a key role in the social and economic well-being of our community," said Denis Prévost, President, Coniston Curling Club.

"I’m pleased that the Government of Canada recognizes the significance of our club and I’m excited that we can now open year-round for the benefit of our existing and future members, as well as local and visiting sports enthusiasts.”

Canada CIP 150 is designed to leave a lasting legacy by supporting the rehabilitation or improvement of existing community infrastructure assets and facilities across the country that promote community and cultural benefits for the public.

FedNor is delivering this program in Northern Ontario with an allocation of $10.4 million over two years, ending March 31, 2018.
