Greater Sudbury will receive more than $3.8 million in federal infrastructure funds from Sept. 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017, to support nine local transit projects.

The funds are part of the federal government's planned $1.49-billion investment to upgrade transit infrastructure across Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Kathleen Wynne announced $688 million in funding Tuesday to support transit improvements in five Ontario cities: Toronto, Ottawa, Waterloo, Barrie and Sudbury.

Toronto will receive $500 million of those funds, while Ottawa will get $156 million.

Sudbury is sharing the remaining $30.6-million investment with Barrie and Waterloo.

The nine Sudbury projects include a $1.8-million investment for transit garage upgrades, $640,000 to purchase 30-foot buses, $512,000 to rehabilitate the transit terminal, and $500,000 to study bus route optimization and service enhancements.

“These investments will provide Ontarians with improved public transit systems that will get them to work on time, and back home quickly and safely,” Trudeau said in a press release. "They will also help generate new jobs, grow the middle class, promote a healthier environment, and lay a solid foundation for the sustainable economy of the future.”
