This summer, the Government of Canada has invested a total of $704,000 to create 279 summer employment opportunities in Sudbury.

The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding to help not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses create summer job opportunities for students. It is designed to focus on local priorities while achieving tangible results for both students and their communities.

Successful employers were notified in March, and for most the process of hiring students began immediately. Since March, two additional student employment opportunities were created specifically aimed at improving the wellness of Indigenous youth in Sudbury.

“The Canada Summer Jobs program is a win-win for employers and for students,” said Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre.

“Sudbury students gain valuable, real world work experience and local employers can help build Sudbury’s future leaders, today.”

Lefebvre identified four categories in Sudbury for Canada Summer Jobs to focus on:

  • Assisting small businesses looking to become more innovative, competitive and successful, especially within the mining sales supply sector;
  • Investing in cultural and creative industries, including Sudbury's multicultural history such as Franco-Ontarien and First Nations cultures, with an eye to Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation;
  • Supporting newcomers to Sudbury, including refugee families and students; and
  • Supporting Indigenous peoples.
