The annual Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) festive program has provided an invaluable opportunity for police to remind the public drinking and driving continues to be a road safety issue.

During routine spot checks this past weekend, police stopped 1686 vehicles throughout the city at various spot-check locations.

Five people were charged with impaired driving, six people were issued 12-hour suspensions, 29 Highway Traffic Act charges were laid, and there were three liquor license act violations.

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 28, the 2003 Festive RIDE checkpoints will be a common sight across northeastern Ontario as police officers stop traffic in an effort to promote sober driving.

The RIDE spotchecks will remain in place throughout the holiday season.
