Finlandia lacing up to Take Strides for SISU

First walking event slated for Saturday, Sept. 24

Sudbury's first seniors gym, located at Finlandia Village, has been very successful, but the work is far from over, said the facility's CEO.

Since the Seniors' Fitness and Wellness Centre opened in January, more than 500 older adults have joined and are actively participating. However, plans are underway to expand the facility, but it will take funds to do so, said David Munch.

“The key to life is exercise,” said Munch. “We want to make this facility look more like a seniors' gym. Additional specialized fitness equipment, outdoor walking trails and programming is needed. Physical fitness has become part of an older adults lifestyle, and we want to continue to support it.”

That's why Finlandia has set a lofty $20,000 fundraising goal for its first Sudbury Strides for SISU, which will be held Sept. 24 at Finlandia Village.

“We're really looking forward to it,” said Munch. “We're really hoping we can engage the greater community of Sudbury, as well as Finlandia Village, which as 450 residents, as well as their family and friends.”

"The current building that houses the gym is 25 years old," Munch said. "The goal is to renovate it into a state-of-the-art facility and to make it a proper gym. We also want to be able to bring people outdoors. This is a great place for winter, but we want to utilize the outdoor space away.”

It will take about $450,000 to fully revamp the facility, Munch said.

Finlandia has partnered with Lasalle Secondary School for Sudbury Strides for SISU. The local high school already has a strong relationship with the seniors of Finlandia, and are eager to enhance it by participating in the walk.

“Students will benefit from enhanced community service and leadership skill development, while the seniors will enjoy fitness and wellness opportunities with the support of young people in the community,” said Maureen McNamara, principal, Lasalle Secondary School. “Many students in the sport and healthy active living program are considering careers in medicine, nutrition, fitness and gerontology, making this partnership an ideal option for learning and for life.”
