Four fire stations and 21 firefighters responded to a small blaze on the roof of Vale’s Copper Cliff Smelter Complex yesterday afternoon.

At around 4:20 p.m. on Oct. 25, Greater Sudbury Fire Service was called to the smelter on Balsam Street in Copper Cliff.

The platoon chief told Sudbury.com this morning work was being done on the roof of the six-storey building when what was described as a small fire broke out. It’s not clear how the fire started, but the safety message included with the release advises safety when using heating appliances.

Firefighters applied water to the blaze to knock it out, and quickly brought it under control.

One firefighter suffered what is described as a minor injury. No one else was injured.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damages.
