Updated May 24 at 3:40 p.m.: Greater Sudbury firefighters have rescued a dog from a multi-storey building downtown where a fire is currently burning.

The dog, named 'Stark', was rescued from a second floor apartment after firefighters smashed the window from outside and brough the animal down by ladder.

The dog was given oxygen by paramedics on the scene.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services is currently battling a fire in a building on Durham Street in the downtown core.

The fire is burning in a multi-storey building that houses Oscar’s Grill and several other businesses on the ground floor. It’s not clear at this time where the fire began or where in the building it is burning, but smoke can be seen pouring from the building.

Police have closed Durham Street, Larch Street and Old City Hall Lane and the public is being asked to avoid the downtown at this time.

Parts of downtown are also experiencing a power outage at the moment, though it is unclear where this is related to the fire. Greater Sudbury Utilities is working to address the outage.

The fire is also forcing some GOVA Transit routes to be rerouted. Keep an eye on the City of Greater Sudbury's social media accounts for route updates.
