Firefighters had to rescue a man and a dog from an aluminum boat on the thin ice of McCharles Lake in the Whitefish area late last night.

Shortly before 10 p.m. April 14, Greater Sudbury Fire Services were called out to the lake, where the man had attempted to rescue the dog.

The man had successfully used the aluminum boat to get to the dog, which had strayed onto the ice, and pulled the animal into the boat.

However, the man was unable to get back to shore — he'd gone out about 500 metres — and firefighters were called to the scene. Nineteen firefighters from four fire stations responded to the call.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

Platoon Chief Andre Groulx advises people to avoid similar situations by making sure their dogs are tied when near thin ice.

If a dog does stray onto thin ice and gets into trouble, he said they should call firefighters instead of attempting a rescue themselves and potentially putting their lives at risk.
